Community gardensHOPE gardens are organic gardens nurtured by the local community. The produce from the HOPE gardens are bought and sold locally to restaurants, lodges and local people. Any profits from their enterprises are directed back into the community by providing local nursery, primary and secondary schools
with much needed school supplies such as text books, exercise books, pens, pencils, chalk boards, art and sports materials etc.
Beside Nkhata Bay Hospital, HOPE has established a market area where a group of single mothers sell vegetables bought wholesale from HOPE-malawi. Crucially the women pay for their stock at the end of the week. In this way the women effectively get a free loan to start their business. They profit from their work and are able to feed their families; Hope Community Gardens profit and are able to help local students reach their potential. In 2011 Growing Voices (an American NGO) partnered with HOPE to establish garden projects in Chikale village for the benefit of Chikale primary school and in Chihame area to support both Chihame nursery and Kambuwi primary schools. Their support has been invaluable and hugely appreciated in these communities In February 2012 we were able to introduce two new community gardens, one in Kakumbi village and another at the HEART junction in Nkhata Bay. |
